Abernethy has conducted many workshops in drawing and printmaking, which have been held out of school hours, and life drawing has been particularly popular. The workshops have been organised for both public and private schools. The feedback has been very positive, with impressive results. This is a great opportunity to demystify life drawing for the student and encourage the pursuit of the creative process. The workshops are of particular value if the student wishes to further their education in the Visual & Fine Arts.

Art can mean anything to do with creativity, such as poetry, music, dance, visual, painting and sculpture. The merging of the arts and healing assists in the transformation, a way to move forward in life, a process of, and a spiritual pathway to well being. The process of making art is a powerful healing force uniting mind, body and spirit.
“..through art there can be a bridge built to the Soul..” Carl Jung.

The Art as Healing workshops are designed as experiential. This assists the participant in understanding the process through the appreciation and of their associations relating to their art. This also assists in the gaining of awareness and insight. There is no need to have had any art experience to engage in the workshops. It is a journey of discovery and of accessing your personal power, your symbols for a pathway to the self . This enables you to build and live in your fullest capacity. There are many times in life when we come to a crossroad, or a place of questioning. This may be a time for stillness and reflection to assist one in making sense of life’s choices. This is where art and healing merge as a tool, working with dreams, myths, mandalas, masks, collage, writing, journaling, voice, movement and ritual to help fully express ourselves. “It is by going down into the abyss that we recover the treasures of life. Where you stumble there lays your treasure”. Joseph Campbell Transpersonal Art as Healing, Workshop

Lorraine worked at Connections as an art facilitator for 10 years. The job description was to facilitate an art program for people who suffered with mental illness. This was carried out in the studio/premises of Connections in Tweed Heads South. Lorraine assisted in an ongoing art program of painting, drawing, clay work, printmaking, murals and mosaics. This was shown to be very therapeutic for recovery and continued management of daily living. The act of creating helps in quietening the mind, gaining a sense of pride in what is achieved, while participating, also allows for social interaction.
Within 10 years, murals were painted on table tops, prayer flags were made using linocut printing techniques. These were designed, cut and printed by the consumers. These images hang in their outdoor social area as a reminder of the positive symbols supporting their lives. Mosaics decorate the garden beds and artworks now hang in their activities room, and throughout the rest of the building. Over the years Art Exhibitions have been held to commemorate Mental Health Week. They have been very successful in feedback and sales. The Consumers have also made calendars and cards of their artwork. The cards and calendars have then been sold to the public as a way of supporting the art program. A number of consumers have also articulated into furthering education in their art practice by studying at TAFE. Below are some examples of artwork completed:
