PUBLIC ART MURAL PROJECT –YOUTH CENTRE CABARITA.

Commissioned by the Tweed Shire Council and the Cabarita Business Association

I was commissioned by the Tweed Shire Council to facilitate art workshops with the young people of the Cabarita Youth Centre. The outcome of the workshops was to create a design based on the youth’s images of what makes Cabarita special to them. The ages of those involved were from 12 to 25 years, and we had on average of 16 people working regularly to paint and complete the final vision.

Many young artists participated in the creating and painting of the mural on weekends and outside of school hours. It was great being involved, facilitating, directing, watching, and painting, whilst enjoying the positive interaction and feedback with the local residents and community. All in all, a very positive experience, and I feel very proud of our final result, which is a Contemporary Public Art Work.

The youth of Cabarita can take pride and ownership of such a positive metaphor for their Youth Centre. Thankyou to the Tweed Shire Council, Cabarita Business Association and above all the youth, for making this possible.

Preparatory drawings for the Geographic Creation Story of Fingal Causeway.

The Fingal School P & C commissioned Lorraine to facilitate, design and coordinate a mural which consisted of 3 large panels. These panels were to depict 3 separate stories relating to the origins of the causeway in Fingal. The first story being the geographic description of it’s beginnings, and the second being the Aboriginal story, and the third is the Irish story that Fingal shares with Ireland.

Every child in the school created drawings of the 3 separate stories, and from these Lorraine created the 3 panel designs. Once the images were drawn up every child painted their drawings. Lorraine completed the design, painting along with the support of volunteer parents and the staff to complete the panels. The finished mural panels have been installed on the exterior of the new building. These images may be viewed from the street approaching the Fingal Public School. The mural was a part of a larger project which included sculpture, aboriginal gardens and a new multifunctional building which was funded by both the state and federal governments.

Mural in the Seclusion Room

MURALS IN THE LOW SECURITY COURTYARD.

This project was the brain child of Michael Shnookel, who was the Head of the Tweed Valley Clinic Tweed Heads Hospital when it first opened. He had a vision for the inclusion of art, as a healing support, in the form of murals throughout the clinic. This became a reality when Kingscliff Rotary supported and funded the project.

Medical professionals, consumers, aboriginals and young people were all part of the consultation process to assist in the final design of the mural. Lorraine, with the assistance of aboriginal artist Mark Daemon Browning and with Lyn Vermeesch, TVC patients, art students and volunteers , painted the murals in the seclusion room, high security courtyard, low security courtyard, staff courtyard and 2 walls on the exterior of the hospital building. This was a major project for the Tweed Heads Hospital and was completed in time for the Official Opening in 2003.

Every student in the school was given the task to produce a number of drawings relating to their environment and the qualities that make Kingscliff special. Then Lorraine set about incorporating their pictures into the final design of the 4 panel Mural.

Under the supervision of Lorraine and volunteer parents, every student painted their image onto the panels which now decorate the Kingsciff School walls. This gives the children a great sense of ownership of their art and it’s contribution to the Mural. These artworks were then made into beautiful cards to assist in further fund raising for the school.

MURAL COMMISSIONED BY WOMMIN BAY AGED CARE FOR THE DEMENTIA CARE SECTION OF HOSTEL

Lorraine Abernethy is the artist, and the designer of the large mural, which is a brightly coloured, stylised version of the Tweed Valley. The mural is designed using colour as a way of support to enhance the quality of life for the elderly dementia sufferers. The mural was painted with the assistance of art students and volunteers under Lorraine’s professional supervision.

BANNER COMMISSION FOR COMMUNITY HEALTH, TWEED HEADS HOSPITAL.

The Fabric Banner was designed for Tweed Heads Community Health, Tweed Heads Hospital.“Say No to Domestic Violence.”
The banner is made up of velvet, felt, braid and appliqué of a variety of fabrics and with hand stitching.
In the making of the Banner I was assisted by volunteers and women who were survivors of domestic violence.
